The task was to create a sleeper for two gauges being used alternatively. Beside the capacity to absorb the occurring load as a precondition the sleeper needed to be designed the way that it can be produced by using the existing sleeper production line. The design and calculation is based on EN 13230 with load distribution according to UIC 713 To define the bending moments by considering the third rail’s influence the calculation was based on girder-grid-model. Tests done with the first sleepers produced proved the model of calculation to be on the very save side.
